Black Lives Matter in Venezuela - The United States is preparing for the upcoming Presidential and Congressional elections in 2016. Much rhetoric has been made about everything from ISIS to domestic issues such as refugees, illegal immigrants, to even the violence in Chicago. One movement coming more visible this past year, Black Lives Matter, sent a co-founder of this movement to observe the congressional elections in Venezuela. Opal Tometi, at the invitation of the Maduro socialist government, said that she was “in a place where there is intelligent political discourse” and that Venezuela appears to “have a truly thriving and rigorous democratic system.” I’m sorry, but some people open up their mouths and stupid just comes out. After having taken multiple trips to Venezuela, I can say that the political, economic, and social culture is not thriving. When we first went to Caracas over 10 years ago, the exchange rate was around 3 Venezuelan Bolivars to 1 US Dollar. Currently it is closer to 200 Venezuelan Bolivar to a dollar. Is this a thriving system? On February 18, 2014, Leopold Lopez, one of the leaders of the opposition to Hugo Chavez and Nicolas Maduro, was arrested and placed in prison on charges of murder and terrorism. The current government, which arrested Lopez, reduced the charges to arson, damage and criminal gatherings. Lopez’s crime? He called for peaceful protests against the current regime. In September of 2015, Lopez was found guilty of violence, criminal association and accused of attempting a coup. The government was allotted about 700 hours of testimony; but Lopez and his attorneys were given less than three hours. Is this a thriving democratic system? In regard to the elections held in December, President Maduro said that the socialists would prevail “by any means.” Is this a democratic system? Is this intelligent political discourse? In an effort to try to get as many votes as possible, the socialistic government ordered that the polls stay open for an extra hour. Nevertheless, the opposition (MUD) won the majority (99 of the 167 seats) in the national assembly. America! - Take heed! Just look at what has happened in Venezuela in the last 20 years. Now, America has its own declared Democratic Socialist, Bernie Sanders, and other political leaders who would destroy the unique and constitutional foundations of America. Pray for America! Pray for Venezuela and our brothers and sisters serving the Lord in their country.
